University of North Texas Athlete Breaking Barriers

| Troy Guter and Lydia Meeks

Wrestling isn’t just a sport to University of North Texas junior Avery Souders, it’s a mindset.

For the past eight years, Souders has spent countless hours perfecting her craft. And the results show nothing less.

“I’m a little hard on myself,” she said. “I’ve gotten second at nationals two times in a row.”

Souders started wrestling as a freshman in high school because of her older brother, Austin. After reaching All-American status twice in high school, she was then recruited by King College in Tennessee.

But an early injury forced Souders to watch from the sidelines for two years while others battled for the national title she always dreamed of.

So in the Spring of 2014, Souders made the choice to move closer to home and attend UNT. There was only one problem...

His sorrow in leaving USC is only offset by the excitement of starting a program from the ground up in Northridge.

Wrestling Returns to Richland College

By Cesar Canizales - After a three-decade absence, Richland College in Dallas, Texas will revive its wrestling program this fall — and it will include a women’s team.

Wrestling has experienced a revival at the high school level in Texas and other parts of the country, and those student-athletes are looking for colleges were they can continue to compete.

Twenty-one of the schools in the Dallas Independent School District have wrestling programs, and most also have girls’ teams, comprising more than 11,000 boys and 4,000 girls, according to Bill Neal, physical education faculty member and wrestling coach at Richland.

Aside from providing an opportunity for students-athletes, the college also realized the program can serve as a recruiting tool.

“We’re one of only three two-year schools... Read More

Emmanuel Places Five Into Finals, Takes Slim Lead over UCF

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Emmanuel College raced past Central Florida and Grand Valley State into first place Friday, but there’s plenty of work ahead for the Lions as they aim for their first NCWA title.

First up for Emmanuel will be two title clashes against the UCF team it leads by 5.5 points in the team standings, and they come at the start of the finals rounds in the 125- and 133-pound championship matches. The Lions, who led the field with eight semifinalists, will be pressured to win those two matches because they face UCF one more time in the 174 final, where the Knights’ Geordan Speiller, a U.S. Open Greco champion and Pan Am Olympic qualifier, is a heavy favorite.

Emmanuel Wins Four of Five Finals Matches, Wins Collegiate Cup

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Emmanuel College put a championship stamp on the end of its first season, winning the NCWA Collegiate Cup as the association’s overall champion. The Lions won four of their five finals matches to pull away from Central Florida and Grand Valley State, taking the title with 213 points.
