2017 NCWA WestÂern RegionÂal Duals Championship Results
The 2017 NCWA Western Regional Dual Championships featured 16 teams competing for the championship title and national points at Dixie State University in St. George, Utah.
Number one seed Grays Harbor and number two seed Brigham Young University battled-it-out in an early evening championship match that featured standouts on both benches. GH Freshman David Curulla gave his team an early advantage with a first-round pin of BYU's Weston Larson in the 125 pound weight class. With his team trailing 15-2, Freshman Bailey Carlson secured a technical fall over Grays Harbor's Andres Smiley in the 165 pound match.
Following a spectacular showing by both teams, Grays Harbor was crowned tournament champion with a final score of 33 - 23 over BYU.
In the consolation finals, a strong Division II Richland College faced powerhouse Division I Wayne State. The back-and-forth dual of the 3rd and 4th seeds came down to the 197 pound weight class between Wayne State Freshman Landon Wolfe and Ladarius Bennet, a Freshman from Richland. With Wayne State leading 27 - 15 over Richland with just three weight classes to go, Richland needed to secure the win to give themselves the opportunity to win the dual. Wolfe defeated Bennet with a major decision of 17-6. Richland went on to earn 12 points to finish the duals. Wayne state was crowned consolation champions with a final score of 31-27, the major decision at 197 giving WS the score they needed to travel home with the third place trophy.
