Nation­al Duals Quarterfinal Recaps

Here are summaries of the NCWA National Duals quarterfinal matches:



(1) Emmanuel 43, (9) Alfred State 10




Top-seeded Emmanuel College earned two pins, a forfeit and a major decision among the first five matches to race to a 25-0 lead and cruised to a 43-10 win over ninth-seeded Alfred State. The Lions will face Apprentice in the semifinals.



The Lions’ Alberto Perez opened the match with a 14-5 win over Patrick Lehman at 125 pounds, then Dylan Carlile opened up a close match in the third period with two takedowns for a 14-8 win at 133. Will Hale (141) and Jeremiah Lutz (149) each earned first-period pins, and a forfeit at 157 pushed the lead to 25-0.



Tristan Almeter put Alfred State on the board with a 5-0 win over Brennan McCrum at 165, but Dylan Gouine responded with a 4-0 win at 174. George VanValen of Alfred State, the fifth-ranked wrestler at 184, missed a chance to wrestle top-ranked Cody Chaney of Emmanuel, but earned a pin over Jermel Lewis to bring ASU to within 25-10. But three consecutive pins by the Lions’ Maveric Reichsteiner (197), Richard Walker (235) and Kenny Mason (285) sealed the win.






(4) Apprentice 42, (5) Middle Tennessee State 11
Anthony Monahan earned a major decision at 125 pounds and Shalek Colon got a third-period fall to start Apprentice off on its bit 42-11 win over Middle Tennessee.

Carlos Garcia got carried a 4-1 lead in the first period into a 4-2 decision at 141 to get MTSU on the board, but the Builders’ Tristan Mabe (149) and Bryson Woody (157) pinned their next two opponents to pull away with a 21-2 lead. Patrick Foxworth added a 5-3 decision at 165 for Apprentice, which also got two forfeits at 174 and 184.



Sean Kennedy got a first-period pin at 197, and Tyler McClendon earned a 7-0 win at 235 for MTSU. Steven Francisco closed the match with a first-period pin for Apprentice.



Apprentice, a semifinalist for a fourth consecutive season, has placed in the top four the past three seasons and in the final eight every year since 2010.






(3) Grand Valley State 30, (6) Central Florida 29
A disqualification at 174 pounds and a pin at 184 turned the match in Grand Valley State’s favor, and Derek Desloover’s second-period pin at 197 sealed GVSU’s 30-29 win over the defending National Duals champion.

The NCWA will have a new Duals champion for an eighth-consecutive season.



UCF led 17-12 following Austin Bailey’s tech fall win at 165. But GVSU took the lead at 174 when Jarrod Smiley was called for a fifth stalling call and was disqualified, giving GVSU’s Trevor Pickett the win. The Lakers then had Ahmad Khatib (184) take a first-period pin, following by Desloover’s pin for a 30-17 lead, clinching the match.



UCF’s Luttere Eglau scored a second-period pin at 235, and GVSU forfeited the 285 match to net the 30-29 final tally.



The dual’s opening match was a pairing of national title contenders in UCF’s Timothy Sakow, ranked second in the NCWA, and third-ranked Brendan Hazelton. Sakow scored a reversal in the second period, earned a penalty point in the third period, then escaped from Hazelton’s late takedown and added riding time for a 5-2 win.

Justus Griffith scored a second period pin for UCF at 133, and Matthew Seymour got a 5-2 decision on Nick Reddy at 141 to put the Knights ahead 12-0 early. GVSU’s Jake Sobeck ended the run with a first-period pin at 149, and Dylan Dwyer scored a second-period pin at 157 to knot the match at 12-12.

Bailey scored an 18-2 tech fall at 165 to give UCF its last lead at 17-12 in the match preceeding the key 174 bout.






(2) Liberty 29, (7) Springfield Tech CC 18
Tournament host Liberty won eight straight matches from 133 pounds to 235 and rolled to a 29-18 win over Springfield Tech (Mass.). The Flames, the 2012 and 2015 Duals champions, advanced the semifinals for a sixth straight season.



A forfeit at 125 gave STCC a 6-0 lead at the start. Liberty’s Ashton Robinson scored a late escape for a 5-4 decision at 133 to get the Flames started. Tyler Sigler scored a 13-0 major decision at 141, and Brandon Robinson earned two penalty points in the third period to rally for a 6-5 decision at 149 and a 10-6 Liberty lead.

Andrew Burgette scored four four-point near falls in the first period and rolled to an 18-0 tech fall at 157, and Richard Cerebe followed with an 11-5 decision at 165 to push the lead to 18-6. Samuel Karel (174) and Josh McIlhenny (184) scored major decisions to clinch the match as Liberty led 29-6. STCC got a forfeit at 235, and closed the match with Donovan Lozada’s first-period pin to set the 29-18 margin.
