2017 NCWA National Duals Seeds

Three hundred and eleven NCWA wrestlers will descend on Lynchburg, VA beginning this Thursday to compete in the 2017 NCWA National Duals hosted by Liberty University.

There were a few big changes in this month's rankings due to transfers and injuries. Expect even more big changes in the next rankings as the nation's best fight it out at the National Duals at Liberty University (Virginia) and the Western Regional Duals at Dixie State University (Utah) on January 27-28, 2017.

Seniors go 2 – 0 in Final Home Matches

The University of Akron hosted the NCWA Ohio Duals this past Saturday, January 27th against University of Toledo and Ohio State University WC. For seniors Shane Brown (Captain, 174) and Isaac Hammonds (Assistant Captain, 149), it was their final appearance in their home gym, and both went 2-0 on the day to lead the team to a 38-14 win over Toledo and a 46-12 win over Ohio State.

Shu­mak­er rel­ished coaching at Apprentice

For 44 years, Apprentice School coach Bruce Shumaker has made an indelible mark on local wrestling, first as a head coach at Denbigh in 1973-74, and later through a career path that wound through stops at Natural Bridge, Mathews and Lafayette high schools, with a year squeezed in at VMI, before settling in Newport News with his current position in 2007. On Friday night, Shumaker, who will be retiring after this season, made his last .

A Look at Iowa State WC

Even if you asked the most knowledgeable wrestling fans, how many collegiate teams there are in Iowa, most would tell you twenty-five. The five NJCAA programs, the seven NAIA programs, the nine NCAA Division III programs, the one NCAA Division II program and the three NCAA Division I programs. Truth is there are actually 27 collegiate wrestling programs in the state of Iowa. Both the University of Iowa and Iowa State University have club teams that participate in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA). Takedown recently got together with Chase Reising of the Iowa State wrestling club to find out more about the team.

The North­west NCWA Hav­ing an Impact on Wrestling

The recent Spokane Open (Spokane, WA) proved the significant impact that the NCWA teams have had during the past five years. There were 9 NCWA teams and over 25% of the total entries in the tournament were from NCWA teams.

Col­orado State Uni­ver­si­ty hosts NCWA Invitational

The Colorado State University club wrestling team was home this weekend as they hosted nine teams from around the country for the Colorado State NCWA Invite at the Glenn Morris Field House. It was a special opportunity for the program, as they were able to welcome back several CSU alumni wrestlers as well as youth wrestlers.

“Being able to host a tournament on campus in Fort Collins is very exciting for us,” head coach Kendall DeJonge said. “it is a great opportunity for us to connect with the Fort Collins community and wrestling community.”

Akron Avenges Dual Loss­es from Last Season

The University of Akron hosted a tri match this past Saturday, November 19th against Grand Valley State University and Penn State-DuBois. Last season both teams beat Akron by wide margins, but this time Akron came away with two dual wins, defeating GVSU 37-24 and beating PSU-DuBois 39-11.

Uni­ver­si­ty of New Hamp­shire Wrestling Coach Wins District 22 Election

Coach, Official, Wrestler and Leader Henry Marsh was elected to the New Hampshire State Legislator this past Tuesday. Representing North Hampton, Republican Henry Marsh defeated Democrat Judith Day for the House seat by a vote of 1,675 to 1,260.

Marsh, who has Coached the UNH Wrestling program for the past 10 years is also the chairman of the Winnacunnet School Board. He replaces Michele Peckham, who opted against running for re-election this time around.

Appren­tice Wins VA Beach Nationals Open

The Apprentice Wrestling team opened its 2016-17 season at the Virginia Beach National Open on Saturday. Apprentice finished with six Builders taking 1st place, one 2nd place and four 3rd place finishes. The Apprentice School finished with a team score of 255 points to finish in first place out of eight teams.
