UC Santa Barbara Makes Mark at California Championships
The University of California at Santa Barbara Wrestling Team took four wrestlers to the NCWA California Championship Tournament hosted by Fresno State, yet despite the small squad, there were some notable successes. Making his first tournament of 2017, heavyweight Xavier Cardenas scored two pins to earn 1st place. Evan Marschall came in second at 156, pinning his first opponent, but losing a hard-fought match to defending West Coast Champion, Youssef Aref of UCLA. Michael (Jake) Lazich pinned his third opponent at 149 to gain a third place finish. Dropping to 133, Matthew Pham had a tough day, coming in third. The Gaucho's are now looking ahead to the West Coast Conference Championships where all of the NCWA California teams expect to attend.
