NCWA Nation­al Duals Head West for the First Time

DALLAS – The
NCWA kicks off its National Duals tournament Friday with seven of its top eight-ranked programs competing at the Casablanca Resort Event Center in Mesquite, Nevada. For the first time, seven of the NCWA’s eight conferences have representation within the tournament’s 16-team field, including an all-time high of six programs from the Northwest and West Coast Conferences competing. MIT’s Skag­gs Places Third at Jim Aguiar

The MIT wrestling team traveled to Plymouth State University on Saturday, January 12th to compete at the Jim Aguiar Invitational. MIT finished in 10th place as a team. New NCWA Wom­en’s Rank­ings Released! — 1.15.19

There is a new #1 team for the Women's Division. The rankings for the women's division have been updated and will soon be added to the NCWA website under the rankings heading.

The new rankings for the NCWA Women's Division have been released (see full rankings HERE).

The new top team in the land is Grays Harbor College with a total of 10-ranked wrestlers. Previous #1 SW Oregon CC is currently ranked #2 but this may change once their WCWA season is completed and the team has more interaction with the other Northwest Conference teams. Overall the Northwest Conference appears to be the powerhouse for the Women's Division with the top-3 teams and 4 in the top-15. The biggest move in the team rankings was by Schreiner University (TX, Southwest Conference) as they moved up from 13th to #5 after strong showings in the UNT Invite and EZ-Flex Southwest Scuffle.

The top women at each weight include: 101 - Maria Reyes (Fr, Big Bend CC), 109 - Ivy Navarro (So, SWOCC), 116 - Cynthia Ramirez (So, Grays Harbor), 123 - KaMele Sanchez (Sr, Colorado State), 130 - Marina Goocher (Sr, Michigan-Dearborn), 136 - Tara Linneman (So, Springfield Tech), 143 - Shannon Ripley (Jr, Husson), 155 - Maxine Knetter (Jr, Wisconsin), 170 - Cendall Manley (Jr, Liberty), and 191 - Leilani Camargo-Naone (So, Midland).

Men’s Rank­ings and D1 / D2 Team Rank­ings — 1.15.19

Of note, Apprentice holds on to the #1 spot, despite losing in a dual at the Virginia Duals to #2 Liberty. These rankings are projections for the National Championship in March. Additional points will be added after the completion of the National Duals which are applied to the Grand National Championship standings. The remaining top-10 are #3 Springfield Tech, #4 Grand Valley State, #5-t Mott CC (up 4 spots), #5-t Central Florida, #7 Toledo, #8 Grays Harbor, #9 North Texas, and #10 Middle Tennessee State.

The D-2 team rankings see two teams tied for the #1 spot with East Carolina and West Chester. The top-5 are rounded off by #3 Texas A&M, #4 Penn State WC, and #5 Western Washington.

Individually, there are two new #1s with Jerron Thomas (Sr, 184, Mott) returning to the lineup after a 2nd place finish in 2018 and Jesse Gaudin (Sr, 285, UCF) also returning to try to become the next 4x All-American after finishing 4th in '18, 2nd in '17, and 2nd in '16.

The remaining #1 wrestlers are: 125 - Colton Messick (Jr, Apprentice), 133 - Brendan Hazelton (Sr, Grand Valley State), 141 - Tyler Sage (Sr, Florida), 149 - Zach Blevins (So, Toledo), 157 - Dan Ritz (Sr, Penn State WC), 165 - Chad Simmons (Sr, Apprentice), 174 - Jacob Berry (So, Springfield Tech), 197 - Austin Amos (Sr, Liberty), and 235 - Jeff Allen (Fr, Liberty).

The next rankings are scheduled for release after the completion of the National and Regional Duals in Mesquite, NV and Akron, OH, respectively on Jan 25-26, 2019.

Appren­tice Fin­ish­es Atop a Field of 18 Teams

The Apprentice wrestling team had a stellar performance at the Waynesburg Invitational this past weekend, placing 2nd of 18 teams despite not having an entry at two different weights. Alma College and Washington & Jefferson were co-champions with 110 points, followed by Apprentice with 104 and Mount St Joseph with 95.

2019 NCWA Nation­al Duals Field Set!

The field for the 2019 NCWA National Duals hosted by the West Coast Conference has been announced by the NCWA. The event will take place at the Casa Blana Resort in Mesquite, Nevada on January 25-26, 2019. The two closest cities to the venue are St. George, UT (home of Dixie State University) and Las Vegas, NV (home of UNLV).

The inaugural women's rankings are finally here! The women's division has grown by nearly double from last year, which has allowed hte NCWA to produce rankings. Several teams in the Northwest, Southwest, and West Coast Conferences have been wrestling for 3 weeks already getting a head start on the rest of the competition.

Appren­tice Wrestling Leads NCWA Pre-Season Rankings

The National Collegiate Wrestling Association has formally announced the pre-season rankings for the 2018-19 season. Expectations are high for the Builder wrestling squad after a runner-up finish last season. The Apprentice School Builders will enter the season at the top of the rankings, followed closely by in-state rivals, Liberty University. The Builders has yet to top Liberty in a dual-meet or conference championship since Liberty joined the NCWA in 2011.

The 2018-19 NCWA season will start just as it ended...with Mid-Atlantic Conference foes The Apprentice School (Newport News, VA) and Liberty University (Lynchburg, VA) battling out for the top spot at year's end.

For­mer NCWA Cham­pi­on Geor­dan Speiller Qual­i­fies for U.S. Greco-Roman World Team

Georgan Speiller, a former NCWA champion at Central Florida and now wrestling with the Florida Jets Wrestling Club, qualified for the 2018 U.S. Greco-Roman World Team over the weekend by winning the 82 kg weight class at the World Team Trials in Tulsa, Okla.

Speiller defeated two-time World Team member Cheney Haight in consecutive matches in the best-of-three finals format, 7-2 in the first match, then with an 8-0 tech in the second match. Speiller will wrestle with the U.S. team in October at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary. It is Speiller’s first World Championships at the Senior level after representing the U.S. at two Junior World Championships in 2012 and 2013.

Four Titles Earn North Texas GoGreco Championship Repeat

DALLAS – North Texas wrestlers won four weight classes and posted runner-up finishes in three others to retain its national title at the NCWA's GoGreco National Championships on Saturday. The Eagles, with the tournament's deepest lineup, scored 65 points to outdistance second-place Richland College's 37 points. UNT topped Richland for the 2017 title as well.

Big Bend to return men’s wrestling, introduce women’s program

NCWA Hon­ors 147 Stu­dent-Ath­letes on All-Academic Team

DALLAS - The National Collegiate Wrestling Association announced its All-Academic members for the 2017-18 competition year honoring 147 student-athletes from its men's and women's divisions.

Brigham Young led all schools with eight honorees. The Cougars also won the top spot in the NCWA's All-Academic Team awards announced last month (see related story). Central Florida, second in the team academic listings, tied with Maine for second with six individual honorees. The Apprentice School and Liberty had five honorees each, while the teams at Yale, Utah State, Wayne State College, Florida, Rutgers, Emmanuel College and Clemson each earned four spots on the All-Academic individual list.
