Collegiate Jiu-Jitsu League Holds Initial Competition

| BJJ World

On Saturday, April 27th, Collegiate Jiu-Jitsu competition became a reality. Chris Martin, jiu-jitsu coach at Marquette University and head marketing officer of Nova Gyms in Milwaukee, with the support of the National Collegiate Wrestling Association, hosted the first-ever Collegiate Team Dual meet where Marquette students faced off against the Northern Illinois University Jiu Jitsu team. The competition, though new and unique, included features familiar to grappling fans of all persuasions.

The first competition, reflecting the influence of the NCWA, was a true dual meet, where teams of six faced off, each in his/her own weight class. Wins by submission offered higher point values, and faster wins offer still higher rewards with a team champion being crowned based on total points.

Apprentice School wrestler makes history. She can weld, too

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) — Before working out with the wrestling team, Erin Aragon sat down and told a childhood story that was difficult to believe.

She was maybe 10 or 11 years when she forced herself to order a meal in a restaurant — out loud, by herself — for the very first time.

"I cried when I did it," she said. "It was really, really bad."

A phone interview with her mother confirmed this story. Lisa Aragon said her daughter was painfully shy and could not walk into a new experience without being terrified.

How things change.

Fulfilling a Promise

Cody Richmond got to experience a moment that most wrestlers will never live through. Short of an outright national championship, the right to apply the title of All-American to his or her name is a cherished thing.

It happened last weekend for Richmond, a Shady Spring native who never even placed in the state tournament. Yet there he was, on the podium at the NCWA Grand Nationals in Allen, Texas, one of eight place winners at 174 pounds.

It might never have happened if not for a conversation he had with his dying grandfather a few years ago.

Ron Chambers was battling white blood cell cancer. He didn’t have much time when he talked to Richmond about wrestling — something Richmond had given up by that point.

“It was one of the last times he was .....

Five Champions Lead Liberty to Repeat as NCWA Champions

ALLEN, Texas – Liberty defended its NCWA title Saturday, and the suspense was gone shortly after the finals matches began. The Flames won their third overall championship and became the sixth team to repeat as NCWA champions in the association’s 22 seasons.

The Flames entered Saturday’s bouts with a 21.5-point lead over rival The Apprentice School, and within three weight classes had expanded the separation enough to clinch the team title. Coupled with its title at the NCWA National Duals and team points earned there, Liberty also claimed the NCWA’s Collegiate Cup as its Grand National champion. The win was Liberty’s third team title in the last five years. All five of Liberty’s finalists won their matches, leaving the rest of the field in its wake.

Liberty — Apprentice Showdown this Weekend

The Apprentice wrestling squad had historically ruled the Mid-Atlantic conference, winning eight straight team titles from 2003-2011. They also won back-to-back Northeast Conference titles before moving conferences. The team was largely uncontested in conference action, until a new in-state rival entered the division. Liberty.

When Liberty University dropped its NCAA D1 program, the team joined the National Collegiate Wrestling Association and immediately made waves in the competition. Apprentice has not won a conference team title since Liberty first knocked them off in 2012, however the drought could soon be over.

Despite losing two head-to-head dual meets to Liberty this season, the Builders are still #1 in the team tournament rankings. Last season Liberty won the MAC with 200.5 team points, beating 2nd place Apprentice by 25. At the National Championships Apprentice nearly flipped the script, narrowly losing the National team title by half of a point.
