Liberty Has Advantage in Rankings Heading to Allen
The last rankings before the National Tournament in Allen, TX have been released. Liberty shows a sizable lead (87 points total) over their closest rivals Central Florida, Grand Valley State, Apprentice, and Emmanuel. 27 D-1 and 26 D-2 teams amassed points in the individual rankings (10 pts for #1, 1 pt for #10-#16). The National and Regional Duals points are added to the team score. These rankings are only a prediction on what would happen if the top-8 achieve All-American status, but the only REAL rankings are the ones that stand on March 10, 2018.
The #1 ranked wrestlers in each weight (and likely top seeds in the tournament as voted upon by the Chairmen of each of the 9 conferences) are as follows: 125 - Byron Smith (14-1, Sr, MTSU), 133 - Arthur Payne (29-5, Fr, Mott CC), 141 - Tyler Sage (29-2, Jr, Florida), 149 - Jay Sheppard (19-4, Jr, Emmanuel), 157 - Chad Simmons (28-10, Jr, Apprentice), 165 - Bailey Carlson (24-9, So, BYU), 174 - Noah Curreri (24-3, Fr, Queens), 184 - George VanValen (37-1, Sr, Alfred State), 197 - Robert LaPeter (14-0, Sr, Florida State), 235 - Austin Amos (26-5, Sr, Liberty), 285 - Jesse Gaudin (27-3, Sr, Central Florida). This is the first time in the history of the NCWA Rankings that the #1 wrestler for each weight class represents 13 different teams.
The top-24 wrestlers in each weight class will be voted on using a combination of Conference results and NCWA rankings. These 24 wrestlers will be placed in #1 to #24 seeds with the remaining wrestlers in the tournament drawn in to the #25 to #64 spots.
