Lakers Knock Off NCAA DII Davenport University

February 11, 2018 | Rick Bolhuis

Grand Rapids, MI - In the last dual meet action of the season for each program, the bouts were split five matches a piece. Bonus point victories would be the deciding factor in the dual that came down to the final match of the day.

The Panthers of Davenport University jumped out to a fifteen point lead with victories at the first four weights. However, the Lakers battled tough and kept three of those matches to a decision - preserving precious bonus points.

At 157, Adam Burton (FR, Dewitt) put the Lakers on the board with an 11-10 decision. He recorded the deciding takedown with under five seconds remaining for a huge victory for himself and the team.

Jake Sobeck (JR, Rogers City) followed with a dominating decision at 165 to cut the team score to 15-6. After another tough bout with GVSU holding it to a DU decision, the Lakers trailed 18-6. That’s when the Lakers went on a roll.

Brady Bischer (FR, Yale) went up from his normal 174 to earn a decision at 184 - making the score 18-9.

Next, Brenden DeVries (SO, Hudsonville) went up from his normal 184 to earn a first period fall at 197. This put the dual within reach as GVSU now trailed by only three.

With the dual result on the line, Harun Bogdanic (SR, Hamtramck) entered the mat knowing he needed to secure bonus points for a Laker victory. He scored three takedowns, a set of four nearfall points, an escape, and the advantage time point to record a major decision. This victory gave the Lakers four team points and the team victory, 19-18.

The Lakers finish the season with ten wins and three losses in duals, including a third place finish at the NCWA National Duals.

The Lakers are next in action when they host the NCWA’s Great Lakes Conference Tournament on Saturday, February 24. Action begins at nine am and the top five finishers at each weight will qualify for the 2018 NCWA National Tournament.
