Wrestling team looks to pin down awareness

Brown is the president of the wrestling club and is currently on a mission to spread the sport around campus so the team can continue to grow after he leaves the mat next semester.
“With us not being able to get recognition in the College Park Center as an NCAA team, it’d be nice to get our accolades displayed in the [Maverick Activities Center] somewhere as the [National Collegiate Wrestling Association] team that we are,” Brown said. “All-American is All-American, no matter the division. The title is still earned.”
The wrestling club started eight years ago, and despite times when the team seemingly lacked enough interest to sustain involvement, Brown said the club managed to avoid the take down, thanks in large part to its coach, Casey Hudson.
In addition to coaching the men’s team, Hudson is also a wrestler who competes with his brother, kinesiology junior Justin Hudson, on the team.
“I’m originally from Colorado Springs, and where I come from wrestling is a big deal,” Hudson said.
The club currently has 16 members on the men’s team and five members on the women’s team, which is entering its first year of competition.
Brown said he is still looking for wrestlers to recruit to the men’s and women’s teams, but it has been difficult to expand the wrestling brand at UTA because of the lack of exposure.
“I had a seat at the roundtable convention with president Vistasp Karbhari with my main focus to solidify the sport’s position on campus,” Brown said.
Aerospace engineering junior Denise Huerta is one of the wrestlers on the women’s team and said she is looking forward to pinning down her opponents in the 110 pound division to total submission this season.
“I started wrestling my junior year in high school,” Huerta said. “A lot of guy friends of mine were involved in the sport, and them thinking I wouldn’t be able to handle it gave me the drive to pursue the sport.”
The women’s team will have its first meet of the season Nov. 15 in Austin TX at UT Austin and will host its first home competition Nov. 21 at the MAC.
In order to prepare for the season and raise awareness of the club, both teams are running 10 miles Oct. 4 as a fundraiser to help raise money for its budget this season. Since wrestling is technically classified as a club, funds aren’t provided from the school for their travel and uniforms.
“We would like to get donations per mile during the race, but any form of donation will help our team gain income to benefit us throughout the year,” Brown said.
The men’s and women’s teams will host their first home meets Nov. 21 at the MAC in the gymnasium.
