Traditional Neighborhood Leadership
Spark Award Winner - Heart of Glendale Neighborhood Leaders
Mickey Nunez, John Torres, and Rebecca Ontiveros are the neighborhood leaders of the "Heart of Glendale" neighborhood. These individuals have taken many steps towards building capacity in their neighborhood. The group provided leadership training that they felt was needed in the following areas: advocating, improving communications, community diversity, addressing neighborhood concerns, working as a team, problem solving and conflict resolution. They have worked hard to ensure the overall quality of life is improved in their neighborhood by bringing in resources that residents can utilize. The group also organized two large events that were held in their neighborhood park. More than 7,000 people attended both events.
Also, another way of building capacity is by starting the only AZ junior college wrestling program that is functioning by volunteers and donations. This builds capacity in the community and in these students by educating them at Glendale Community College and allowing the opportunity of empowerment. They are true "Sparks" in the Heart of Glendale neighborhood.
