FARGO, N.D. – Minot State University freshman Jaymes Stanley (Port Saint Lucie, Fla.) won his first match as a Beaver, lost to the eventual champion in the 165 pound weight class and finished in sixth place at the Bison Open Saturday.
Stanley defeated Garrett Bothun of Concordia College to get his first win of his collegiate career, earning a5-2 decision. Stanley ended the day going 2-3 overall before succumbing to Josten Coleman of CC in the fifth-place match 6-3 ending the day as the Beavers only placing wrestler.
“It was a great job by the Jaymes,” said MSU head coach Robin Ersland. “He did a great job to place in a truly tough tournament.”
He was one of five MSU wrestlers who won a match at the tournament featuring NCAA Division I, II and III teams including No. 4 ranked University of Minnesota. Stanley was one of three rookie Beavers wrestlers to earn at least one win.
The Beavers also got a pair of wins from freshman Marcus Bausman (Minot, N.D.), who went 2-2 at 157. Luke Michaelson (So., Williston, N.D.) finished 2-2 at 184. Freshmen Joshua Douglas (Kissimmee, Fla.) and Drew Spaulding (Bismarck, N.D.) each went 1-2 at 125 and 149 respectively, while junior Wade Weppler (Minot, N.D.) was 1-2 at 197.
“It was good to get the season started,” Ersland said. “I saw some good things and was pleased with our effort and conditioning.”
MSU volunteer assistant coach Richard Byrd also fell in the fifth-place match to earn sixth overall as an unattached wrestler.
The Beavers head back to the area next week as they will participate in the Concordia College Open Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.
