SIUE defeats Anderson
RALEIGH, N.C. - SIUE wrestling Head Coach David Ray and his Cougars finished 1-3 Saturday at the Wolfpack Duals.
The Cougars defeated Anderson 26-16 to open the event but would drop its next three dual matches to Campbell (31-12), Shippensburg (24-22), and Gardner-Webb (32-13). Ray said he thought a healthy Cougars team may have been able to go 3-1. Campbell and Gardner-Webb are members of the Southern Conference, which SIUE competes in next season.
"I guess I was spoiled the last three years because we didn't have injuries and as many guys out of the lineup as we have this season," said Ray.
The Cougars did have bright spots throughout the day. Patrick Myers, wrestling at 133 pounds, was 4-0 after winning over Campbell's Tanner Bidelspach and Gardner-Webb's Jake Reinemund. He also had his hand lifted for a pair of forfeits. Myers wrestled two exhibitions matches and won both.
Deshoun White was perfect on the mat with four victories. His biggest win came against Anderson's Will Sutton at 174 pounds. White dispatched Sutton 18-6. Ray said having family at the meeting pumped up White.
"He looked good. He was moving well and attacking. He scrambled well. When he got into a tough position, he was working hard to get into a better position," said Ray.
Josh Wood was the biggest scorer of the day at 197 pounds. He recorded pins over Anderson's Jordan Denmark and Campbell's John Merickel as well as a major decision over Shippensburg's Keith Dahlheimer.
SIUE, 2-9, next returns to the Vadalabene Center for a 7 p.m. dual match Thursday against Central Missouri
