Beavers Have Three Champs in Ridgewater Open
WILLMAR, Minn. – Minot State University wrestling had one of its best days on the mat since returning to collegiate competition.
The Beavers finished with three champions and a total of eight place winners at the Ridgewater College Open Saturday.
“It was a pretty good day,“ said MSU head coach Robin Ersland. “I'm not sure if we had that many place winners in one tournament last year and I know we didn't have that many champions.”
Minot State's champions were all freshmen as Joshua Douglas (Kissimmee, Fla.), Kirby Kain (Williston, N.D.) and Marcus Bausman (Minot, N.D.) all finished undefeated and took home titles.
Bausman was the busiest MSU wrestler as he went 4-0 and earned a pin to take on the title at 157 pounds. Kain also earned a pin and went 3-0 to win the championship at 141. Douglas was 2-0 with a pin during his title run at 125.
Along with the title winners, MSU had two third-place finishers and two who took fourth place overall. Luke Michaelson (So., Williston, N.D.) and Wade Weppler (Jr., Minot, N.D.) finished third overall. Michaelson was 4-1, while Weppler was 2-1.
Brandon Gifford (Fr., Hardin, Mont.) finished with two pins and a 2-2 record for fourth place at 141 and Cody George (Jr., Clancy, Mont.) was fourth at 197 with a 1-1 record.
“It will be a long, happy ride home,” Ersland said.
The Beavers are off for a week before two straight events at the MSU Dome. MSU plays host to Dickinson State Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. and will host the 2012 Minot State University Open Jan. 21.
