Back-to-back: Wrestling club wins second consecutive conference championship
The Northwest Missouri State University wrestling club finished ahead of 17 other teams Saturday to take its second consecutive NCWA Southwest Conference tournament in Fort Collins, Colo., and seven wrestlers qualified for the national tournament.
With four first-place and three third-place finishes, the wrestling club earned 86 points to take the top spot. Rounding out the top three were Wichita State University and Air Force Academy Prep.
The Northwest wrestling club, the defending NCWA Division II National Champion, now heads back to the national championship March 10-12 in Daytona Beach, Fla.
At the conference tournament, Jordan Peter (165 lbs.), the national runner-up in his weight class last year, led the way for Northwest. He tallied a record of 4-0, including two pins. Peter pinned Colorado State’s Sean Pellow in 25 seconds and University of Colorado’s Ryne McQueen in 1:29.
Also finishing first in their weight classes were Travis Peter (141 lbs., 3-0 with one pin), Blake Schoeninger (184 lbs., 3-0 with two pins) and Preston Reeves (heavyweight, 2-0 with two pins).
Danny Apgar (174 lbs.) finished third, going 3-1 with a pin in 28 seconds of University of Texas-Austin’s Max Vimar. Apgar’s only loss was a 4-3 decision to Air Force Academy Prep’s Konner Witt. Alex Freund (197 lbs.) and Nick Mckay (235 lbs.) also placed third.
Dr. Tim Crowley is the club's advisor. In addition to wrestling, Jordan Peter is the club president.
The Northwest wrestling club was established in 2005 to provide students with opportunities to participate in organized wrestling competitions. It competes in the Southwest Conference, one of six conferences in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association.
The club has sent a representative to national competition every year since its founding. Last year, Northwest won the NCWA Division II national championship and finished 11th overall out of the 77 teams competing from colleges and universities across the country. That showing was an improvement from a 17th-place overall finish at the national tournament in 2010.
