The University of Maryland-Baltimore County’s wrestling program raised nearly \$8,000 which will go directly to the fledgling wrestling team.
UMBC, a Division I school in Catonsville, Md., has been active within the National Collegiate Wrestling Association the past several years and the ambitions of the school’s wrestling backers are to raise the program to a full-fledged NCAA Division I wrestling team.
With the help of the Maryland State Wrestling Association and USA Wrestling, all of the proceeds generated from the October 9 tournament will go towards UMBC wrestling initiatives.
“The MSWA in conjunction with USA Wrestling, helped make a difference this year at the Retriever Open,” said Neil Adleberg, MSWA State Chairman. “After a mediocre turnout last season, this year’s turnout was huge and unfortunately, over 200 wrestlers who didn’t pre-register had to be turned away.”
“USA Wrestling flew in (resident athlete and three-time NCAA All-American) Wynn Michalak to put on a nice clinic between age-group sessions,” said Adleberg. “The UMBC crew ran the event and over 300 kids had the opportunity to work the rust out. USA Wrestling provided championship t-shirts and awards for the event at no cost to UMBC.”
The next Making A Difference tournament will be the Bronco Nationals on November 5 in Kuna, Idaho.
Making a Difference Tournaments focus on supporting college wrestling with all the money raised going directly to help support college level programs. The series allows athletes to wrestle as USA Wrestling members for the tournament without buying a membership card.
USA Wrestling is looking to expand the Making A Difference program into other states. Those interested should contact USA Wrestling Director of Program Development Les Gutches at [email protected]
