BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Michael Dace and David Devine both won two matches Sunday as SIUE finished 1-2 at the Indiana Duals.
SIUE opened the meet with a 21-17 victory over Gardner-Webb. The Cougars were defeated by Indiana 45-0 and Cleveland State 31-7.
SIUE Head Coach David Ray said it was difficult for his team to bounce back for the Cleveland State match after being shut out by Indiana.
"We lost a little bit of the confidence we had built," said Ray.
Gardner-Webb, a Division I program out of Boiling Springs, N.C., lost its dual to SIUE on the final match as Devine accepted a forfeit at heavyweight.
"We split the matches 5-5 but we were able to get more bonus points. They had some good wrestlers and we wrestled well," said Ray.
John Petrov was the first to claim victory with a 4-0 triumph over GWU's Alex Hamm at 133 pounds. Gabe Hocum later won a 13-6 decision over Justin Guthrie at 165 pounds. Dace provided SIUE's only pin of the day, a first-period win over Erin O'Dell in 1 minute, 10 seconds. Deshoun White added a 9-5 win at 184 pounds, and Devine captured six team points with the forfeit.
After dropping all 10 matches against host Indiana, the Cougars struggled to rebound against Cleveland State. Dace earned a major decision against Cleveland State's Aric Thurn 11-3. Devine would collect an 8-1 victory over Chris Weber at heavyweight.
SIEU next heads to Columbia, Mo., for a pair of duals next Saturday. The Cougars wrestle Chattanooga at noon and Missouri at 3:45 p.m.
