Corey Melinn took a step backward last year, and was not happy about it.
The senior heavyweight for the Grand Valley State University club wrestling team took fifth as a freshman and third as a sophomore at the National Collegiate Wrestling Association National Championships, but last year failed to make it to the podium as an All-American.
But the Coopersville graduate, who never qualified for the state tournament in high school, came back with a vengeance this season and won the national championship in his weight class at the NCWA national tournament this weekend in Macon, Ga.
