Wrestlers Win Two Of Three In Season Opening Event
LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Apprentice School wrestling team opened its 2011-12 season by winning two of three dual matches in a tri-meet at Lynchburg College. They defeated Virginia Tech Club and the hosts Lynchburg Hornets by 66-0 scores, before falling 35-18 to Liberty University.
In the opening match against Virginia Tech Club team, the Builders had three bouts while they won eight by forfeit for the 66-0 win. Freshman Sterling Briscoe won his first collegiate bout by fall in 3:41 at 141 pounds, while juniors Kyle Spruill (149-1:13) and Kevin Gray (235-2:14) took victories in the season-opening dual.
They followed that match by defeating the hosts by the same 66-0 score. In the five bouts they won by fall, four lasted only into the first period. Briscoe won his match by fall in 3:45, while Spruill followed with a win in 1:42 at 149, senior Ricky Anderson got his first win by fall winning in 29 seconds at 157 and junior B.J. Compton scored a win in 2:26 at 165. Freshman Ian Jones won his first match at heavyweight winning in 2:02.
In the final match against Liberty University, its first season in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association after years as a NCAA Division I program, the Flames scored wins in six straight bouts helped the Flames pull away for a 35-18 win. Freshman Dwayne Roes won his first bout at 125 pounds with a victory by fall in 2:17 to start the bout, while Briscoe ended a 3-0 day with his third win by fall in 3:43 at 141 pounds for a 12-6 advantage for the Builders. Gray scored the final points for the Builders with a win by fall in 2:55 at 235 pounds.
Next up for the Builders will be a tournament next Saturday in Lexington, Va. at NCAA Division I Virginia Military Institute.
