Apprentice Sweeps Tri-Match To Claim First 20-Win Season In School History
NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – The Apprentice School wrestling team won three matches on Saturday to close out its regular season. Those wins gave the Builders a 20-8 record which is the first time in school history the wrestlers have won 20 dual matches in a season.
In the opening match, the Builders avenged an earlier season loss to NCAA Division II St. Andrews by defeating the Knights 36-11. Ty Ford and Marcus Chevres put the Builders up 9-(-1) with a decision and fall respectively. St. Andrews was deducted a team point after the 125 pound match for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Following a win by the Knights at 141, Kyle Spruill and Ricky Anderson won the next two matches each by fall to take a 21-2 lead. After a forfeit at 165, the Builders won three of the final four matches with two of those by fall from Steven Ours and Willie Crawford for the 36-11 win.
Apprentice School then took on the College of William & Mary and won 50-0. Chevres, Anderson, Crawford and Anthony Damico won their matches by pinfall to aid in the shutout. The Builders then ended the day with a 45-6 win over Hampton University. Chevres, Anderson and Crawford won their matches again by pinfall to lead the win over the Pirates.
With his three wins today, Anderson now has a record of 43-5 which places him with the third most wins in a season in school history. He trails current assistant coach Micah Amrozowicz and Will Harcum who each had 45 and Cecil Lee who holds the record with 46.
The Builders will hit the mat again on Saturday in Buena Vista, Va. at the Mid Atlantic Conference Championships.
