Panthers Hold Ground at Wisconsin Open

KENOSHA – The Panthers brought seven wrestlers to the 36th Annual Wisconsin Open on Saturday. The event had 268 wrestlers, primarily from NCAA Division 2 and NCAA Division 3 teams, and was hosted by UW-Parkside. Nick Tadeo (Jr, 149) and Darin Kwilinski (Sr, 174) reached the quarterfinals of the tournament. Freshman Alex Hughes (Fr, 125) racked up a pair of pins on the day.
Hughes scored pins over Angel Sierra of Triton College and Bobby Worthington of Northland Baptist Bible College. Hughes also got pinned by Aaron Phemister of McKendree College and dropped a 13-4 major decision to Casey Powell of UW-Whitewater.
“I was pretty happy because it was a kid who beat me back in high school,” remarked Hughes about his first pin as a collegiate wrestler. “I think we’re getting a lot better, and I hope that we continue to progress.”
Nick Tadeo won an 11-9 match over David Cayce of Lindenwood in his first match before knocking off the #5 seed at the tournament, Matt Wahl of Elmhurst, by a score of 12-11 to advance to the quarterfinals. Tadeo then dropped his final two matches of the tournament by scores of 10-3 to Justin Hale of Lincoln College and 20-2 to Chad Woods of UI-Indianapolis. Hale went on to take fourth place at the tournament.
Also reaching the quarterfinals was Darin Kwilinski. Darin was granted the #11 seed at the tournament and received a bye in the first round. He then defeated #6 seed Chris Karl of UW-Stevens Point by a score of 4-2. In the quarterfinals, Kwilinski lost to #3 seed Greg Horn of Elmhurst 9-6. Kwilinski took #8 seed Ryan Woods to overtime in his next match but was unable to secure the victory as Woods scored a takedown near the end of the first minute of overtime to win 8-6. Horn later won fourth place, while Woods secured a sixth place finish on the day.
Chris Vazquez (Fr, 165) went 1-2, while Lyndon Johnson (Fr, 125), Omar Reynoso (Jr, 149), and Tony Franciosi (Jr, 174) went 0-2.
“This tournament had about 70 fewer wrestlers than the Concordia Open did, so I’m not sure you could say the brackets here were tougher to win,” said Panther head coach Koy Kosek. “But as far as picking up a win or two in a bracket, I believe this tournament was probably tougher to do that in. It seemed like the upper tier teams from the Concordia Open were here, generally speaking, and some of the lower tier teams weren’t.
“We went 6-14 today, and I don’t ever want to feel good about losing,” continued Coach Kosek. “If you’re losing and feeling good about it, no matter how good it looks to someone, you’re missing the point of wrestling. But there has already been notable improvement and, with the direction we’re going in, we’ll make up the ground we need to make up by the end of the season. The aspect of wrestling you can control the most is your own effort level, and my wrestlers have been doing an excellent job in that regard the last few weeks, and they did an excellent job in that regard at this tournament. If they were feeling good because of their effort level when we went out for pizza on Saturday night, that’s ok with me.”
UW-Milwaukee’s wrestling team next competes at the Milwaukee Duals at 7:00 pm on Friday, Dec. 7th at Milwaukee Riverside University High School. “We were a bit beat up last week so we didn’t bring everybody, but we should have 10 guys ready to go at the duals on Friday,” affirmed Coach Kosek.
High school students and UW-Milwaukee students will receive free admission at the Milwaukee Duals with a valid student ID.
