CU Wins SWC Open

CU traveled to Arlington, TX this weekend and came away with a team championship in the 9 team SW Conference Open Tournament. The meet featured many of the squads that CU will face in the Conference Championships in February. Kansas State came in second place behind CU, followed by host UT-Arlington in third.
The tournament featured 3 wrestlers from DI Oklahoma, 2 of which are highly ranked and will compete in the NWCA All-Star Duel on November 20th. 3 wrestlers from CU matched up against the OU wrestlers, including Sergio Castillo, who competed in his first wrestling match ever this weekend.
5 CU grapplers placed in the top 4 of the tournament: Jesse Kim (125), Zach Schiffer (141), Justin Knag (149), Jim Marek (157), and Kirby Beegles (165).
Jesse Kim placed 3rd in a weight class that included the No. 1 ranked 125 pound wrestler in Division 1. Zach Schiffer was bumped up to the 141 lb. weight class after being the only wrestler to weigh in at 133. He fared well against heavier competition by finishing in 2nd place. Justin Knag made it to the finals before taking on the No. 2 149 pounder in Division 1. He finished with a second place medal. Jim Marek built on his success from last weekend by winning the 157 pound weight class. Kirby Beegles took 4th at 165.
Also competing at the meet were Sergio Castillo (125), Jen Brouillette (125), Brett Mehlman (165), and Malcolm Lamprecht (174). Malcolm was injured during his second match and was unable to compete for the remainder of the tournament.
The next time CU competes will be on Friday, December 8th in Fort Collins against Colorado State. Exact time and location for the meet has not been determined yet, but will be announced on our web site within the next few weeks.
