UCF @ the GT Open
The wrestling club competed in the Georgia Tech Open this past weekend. Though the tournament proved to be a wake-up call to some of the wrestlers, two veteran wrestlers lead the team during the tournament. Team captain
David “BooBoo” Miller (133 lbs) and Jimmy Myers (184 lbs) dominated their opponents. David was undoubtedly the best wrestler in his weight division as he collected four wins (three of which were pins) to finish the tournament in 1st place.
Jimmy continued to control his opponents throughout the tournament but failed to collect the win in his final match and ended the tournament in 2nd place.
Freshmen Willie Rothenberg (133 lbs) wrestled well and finished in 4th place. He will be an essential asset to the team as the season progresses. Carlos Anglero also finished in fourth 4th place at heavyweight.
“We have a long way to go before we are as good as last year. Our conditioning level is low and we have a lot of young wrestlers this year. However, we have a lot of potential, and I think it is only a matter of time before we prove that we are the best team in the NCWA,” stated captain David Miller.
The Georgia Tech open was a pre-season tournament that had about 180 athletes competing, a 20% increase from last year. While it appeared to be a tough tournament for most of the wrestlers from Central Florida, this pre-season event was a perfect wake-up call. “It made us aware of our weaknesses, and other things we need to work on. This is the best time to see what our strengths are and what needs more work. I just hope we can pull everything together in a couple weeks when we wrestler in the Central Florida Open,” commented Jimmy Myers.
The wrestlers will have a two-week break and then compete in the Knights Brawls Duals on November 4th and the Central Florida Open on November 5th at UCF.
