UCF 2005 – 2006 Season Outlook
Finishing the 2004 and 2005 season as the NCWA National Champions, the Golden Knights hope for another outstanding finish in 2006. Two-time NCWA “Coach of the Year,” Johnny Rouse, will lead the Knights this season followed by assistant coaches: Scott Sherman, and Jason Snow. Two former wrestlers have also joined the coaching staff: Tom Lawlor who finished 3rd in the 2002 season and became a 3 time National Champion in 2003, 2004, and 2005 at the 235-pound weight division, and Jason Balma who finished 5th in 2004 and 4th in 2005. The Knights have shown improvement with every season finishing 8th in 2002, 4th in 2003, and becoming back-to-back National Champions in 2004 and 2005.
Along with the leadership provided by an outstanding coaching staff, the Knights also have capable leaders on the mat. Captains Paul Rothenberg (3rd in 2004 and 5th in 2005 at 133 pounds) and David Miller (3rd in 2003, 2nd in 2004, and 2nd in 2005 at 125 pounds) accept the challenge of capturing another National Championship title.
Miller and Rothenberg, will be joined by other returning All-Americans including: Matt Bohren (5th in the 141-pound division), Brian Guider (6th in the 157-pound class in 2004), and Jimmy Myers (4th in the 184-pound division).
The Knights enter the 2006 season with a handful of returning NCWA National qualifiers who did not place in 2005. Some extremely talented recruits will also accompany the returning National qualifiers. Ryan Reid, Willie Rothenberg, Freddy Carosio, Nicholas Miller, Seve Hewitt, Ramsay Wade, and Jonathan Buhring are just a few of the new wrestlers who hope to fill the holes in the line-up. The Golden Knights lost six All-Americans including three 2005 champions: Todd Hauser (2-time national champion in the 197-pound division), Tom Lawlor (3-time national champion in the 235-pound division) and Jarren Williams (national champion in the 285-pound division).
Accomplishing two National titles has not come without sacrifice; it requires a combination of hard work, dedication, and commitment. The Knights will strive to continue the winning traditions set in the previous years. The Golden Knights nights have become the standard for teams in the NCWA, that standard has placed the Knights on top of the NCWA world.
