Maryville College Fighting Scots Prepare for 60th year of Wrestling

Maryville, TN - Maryville College improved from an 18th to a 7th place finish at the NCWA Nationals, Dallas, TX in 2005. The beginning of the 2006 season marks 60 years of wrestling, dating back to 1929. Steeped in tradition, the Fighiting Scots incresed their total All-Americans to 14 at last years nationals with 3 new NCWA top six place finishers.
As the program now has 4 NCWA All-Americans and 10 NCAA All-Americans dating back through some of its powerhouse years, the student-athletes here are anxious to keep improving.
Junior Co-Captain, Donnie Floyd, who was 5th at (167) and Freshman Co-Captain, Andrew Crawford (235), a State Champion from Ringold H.S. in Georgia lead this young team.
Jon Shannon, of Turpin H.S. in Cincinnati Ohio, enters his sophomore year with a 4th place finish in Dallas at (197). He along with fellow sophomore, Kyle Lofty a 5th place finsher at (285) strengthen the upper-weights for Maryville.
In addition to these 3 returning All-Americans are Daryl Anderson (141), Joe Gunter (174), two more sophomores, who helped accumulate team points at last years championship.
Some hard workinging freshmen in the lower and middle-weights will have to grow up quick to have an impact. "What happens, happens!" Wayne Dunn, Maryville's Head Coach states. "It only works, what we teach, and some will make it happen and some will have to have more proof before they use it", he expounded.
The home opener will be the Second Annual Fighting Scots Duals on December 3, 2005. "We have 12 top ranking NCWA teams coming in to wrestle 5 duals each that day, it is our goal to host our version of the 'Cliff Keen Duals'". It is a lofty comparison, yet with 60 years of experience and great support from the wrestling parents, college students, and local community it will be "top shelf".
The addition of Maryville College Wrestling Cheerleaders is a new group of excited ladies that are a blessing to the program. These young wrestling enthusiasts compliment the three returning mangagers who helped work a mat table at last years nationals. Jessica Abedi, senior, Heather Griffiths, sophomore, and Whit Garner, junior, all pitched in at Dallas to help the NCWA Staff. They considered it an honor and still talk about how much fun, and exciting it was to be a part of this great sport!
