UMBC defeats NCAA DIII Scranton, 24-21
On Friday night, UMBC defeated NCAA DIII Scranton, 24-21, at a dual meet in Newport News Va.
Scranton won the opening two bouts, before UMBC got the board with a pin by Brian Samuels (Leonardtown High) in 2:14, and a 9-0 major decision by Daniel Carr (Southern-Garrett).
Samuels was a third-place finisher at the 4A-3A state tournament last year; Carr was a two-time state finalist in 2A-1A.
After Samuels' and Carr's victories, UMBC was forced to forfeit 157 due to an injury, and dropped a decision at 165. But Zach Coe (Reservoir), another state placer in UMBC's lineup, ran up a 10-0 major decision, and team captain Joe Eassa (Howard) continued his stellar season with an 11-3 victory at 184.
Scranton was victorious at 197, giving the Pennsylvania school a 21-18 lead, heading into the final bout. But John Lapoint (Glenelg), a former NCWA Mid-Atlantic Conference Champ, finished off the dual with a pin in 2:05 to give UMBC the victory.
