Apprentice Opens Season by Winning Electric City Duals
SCRANTON, PA. - The Apprentice School wrestling team opened its 2009-10 season on Saturday by winning four matches and knocking off American International College 22-19 for the championship of the Electric City Duals at the University of Scranton.
The first two duals on the day were against teams from the host Royals. The opening dual was against the A team from Scranton and the Builders rallied from a 12-0 deficit after three bouts to win 31-12. A pin by Will Harcum at 174 pounds in 1:24 put the Builders ahead to stay at 16-12. The next dual was against the #2 team from Scranton where the Builders jumped out to an 18-0 lead after four bouts en route to the 45-3 win.
The final dual in pool play was against Penn State DuBois where the Builders earned five wins by pin and three decisions in the middle eight bouts for a 39-7 victory. Harcum earned his second win by pin at 174 pounds in the quickest of the day for the Builders - 30 seconds.
Going undefeated in pool play pitted the Builders against NCAA Division II American International College in the championship match. As the teams traded victories in the first four bouts, the Builders gained an early 10-7 advantage after a Matt Perry victory by decision at 157 pounds. American International answered that with a pair of decisions at 165 and 174 pounds to retake the lead at 13-10.
The Builders responded with a pair of victories by pin as Harcum finished a 3-0 day winning his bout at 184 pounds in 1:05, while freshman Stuart Roes won his fourth match of the day with a pin in 3:30 at 197 pounds.
"We made some mistakes today, but anytime you come up to Pennsylvania you are going to get tested and we did. It was a real good day," said Apprentice School coach Bruce Shumaker.
Six Builders did not lose a bout today as sophomore Will Sexton (149 pounds) and Roes (197) went 4-0. Harcum (174/184) and Perry (157) each went 3-0, while Quentin Bowling (184) and Freeman Ward each won a bout.
Next up for the wrestlers will be a trip to Orlando, Florida to compete in the University of Central Florida Duals on November 6 and the UCF Invitational the next day.
