UNLV Returning to Collegiate Action after Strong Off-Season

| Dan Gianoutsos

It was not a quiet off-season for the UNLV Wrestling team. The team had plenty of reasons to celebrate: placing top-8 at the NCWA National Wrestling Championships (Allen, TX), earning three All-American titles, and completing a “three-peat” of NCWA West Coast Conference Championships. While many team members went on to wrestle individually in off-season freestyle and Greco-Roman competitions, two Rebels pursued unique styles of grappling – mixed martial arts (MMA) and sumo.

USC, UCLA and Big Ten Wrestling

| J.R. Ogden

USC wrestling is “back,” according to its website and apparently “we’re bigger and better than ever.” That’s more than can be said about UCLA wrestling. The Bruins, in their latest web post, had an “amazing” season. But that was last updated in 2016. USC, it seems, has some interest in the sport.

“... We've made huge strides on our journey toward becoming an NCAA team,” the club’s website notes.

It lists accomplishments like growing from “a handful of wrestlers to more than 30 active members of the co-ed team” ... qualifying 10 wrestlers for the NCWA championship and had a three-time NCWA All-American and “purchased new mats for the team.“ Having mats is a good first step. FULL STORY

A Good Way To Go Out”

| By Gary Fauber The Register-Herald

Logan Robertson remembers the first match he ever wrestled.

"I was in sixth grade. It was my first year wrestling," he said. "I didn't make the basketball team so I tried out for wrestling because my uncle told me he thought I would be good at it." And he was a bit overmatched.

"I wrestled at 78 pounds and weighed 60, probably," Robertson said with a laugh. "I got pinned within the first 30 seconds, I would imagine." So the beginning wasn't a tale of success. It did, however, become a story of

| Grays Harbor SID

Allen, TX - The Grays Harbor Chokers Men's team finished 3rd overall as a team with 8 All- Americans. The Chokers also had 2 All Americans in the same 125 lbs weight class- something that has not been done by any other Grays Harbor Wrestling team.

Grays Harbor had a razor thin finish in the team race with second place The Apprentice School. Grays Harbor consistently found itself in the third and second place spot until Apprentice took the lead by 6.5 points. Liberty stole the show with 229 points followed by The Apprentice School (133.5), Grays Harbor College (127), Penn State WC (106) and Ohio State WC (96). Conference foes Washington State came in 20th place with 34.5 points and Big Bend CC in 30th place with 25.5 points.

Liberty’s 7 – 1 Finals Run Clinches Collegiate Cup, Carter Wins MOW Again; Big Bend CC Takes Women’s Title

| Scott Farrell

ALLEN, Texas – Liberty erased almost every opponent with a 7-1 run through its finals matches to capture the NCWA Championship on Saturday.

The rest of the wipeouts came within the association’s record book. The Flames broke or tied at least five NCWA team and individual records during one of the most dominating tournaments in the association’s 25-year history. Liberty punctuated its 11th NCWA season with its fifth team title, which ties with Grand Valley State for the most all-time among NCWA programs, and its seven national champions broke its own record for most in one season.

“We didn’t get to wrestle last year and we didn’t like it,” Liberty head coach Jesse Castro said. “So we saved up a little bit from last year and used it here.”

Liberty amassed 229 team points to earn the title, its highest NCWA Championships point total in program history backed by 12 All-Americans, the fourth-most of any NCWA season.

Jeffrey Allen led the way for Liberty with a third consecutive national title at 235 pounds. He and Ty’Rae Carter of Texas A&M highlighted the individual efforts as Carter joined Allen by winning the 149 bracket for a third time. Together they are the fifth and sixth wrestlers to win three national titles in NCWA history.

Carter set another record in gaining the Most Outstanding Wrestler Award for a third consecutive season, another NCWA first. His aggressive style led him to three technical falls in the bracket (18-2, 25-10 and 24-8) to go with a 9-0 major decision in the semifinals and an 11-second pin in Thursday’s opening rounds. He was all over Akron’s Andrew Halko in the title match before taking another tech fall with a 22-7 victory.

“I take what the opponent gives me,” Carter said of his aggressive style. “If I can get a fall I’ll try. But I aim to score and so those scores are a result. I coach a lot of youth in the Houston area and in College Station. I know they’re watching me so I have to set an example for them to keep charging.”

Apprentice took second overall with 133.5 points but was still able to hold off Grays Harbor College (Wash.) despite being stung with losses in all four of its final matches. Grays Harbor was third at 127. The Penn State Wrestling Club won the Division II championship for a fourth consecutive seasons – the first time that’s happened – with 106 points, gaining just enough points through the placing matches to fend off Ohio State WC, which led the Division II standings until Saturday morning’s session.

The women’s division was a three-team race commanded by Big Bend CC (Wash.) at the top. The Vikings ran away with the title with 115.5 points followed by Ottawa Arizona in second with 73.5 and Grays Harbor with 72.5.

Eight Finalists, 12 All-Americans Keep Liberty On Top

| Scott Farrell

ALLEN, Texas –Another day of domination kept Liberty atop the NCWA Championships standings board with eight finalists leading its group of 12 All-Americans.

The Flames’ takeover of the tournament brackets is all but wrapped up with 196 team points, and counting. Left to see in Saturday’s placing rounds at the Credit Union of Texas Event Center is how much of the NCWA’s record book can this Liberty team claim as well.
