Tom Layte is entering his nineteenth season as the head coach of the MIT wrestling program. He has coached 2 NCAA All-Americans. Since MIT joined the NCWA in 2009, he has coached 13 NCWA All-Americans, 2 NCWA National Champions and coached the team to 2 NCWA Division 2 national titles (2010 and 2013).

Prior to MIT, Layte coached at Augsburg College, his alma mater, for four years (1996-99), serving as a technique specialist. While coaching at Augsburg, Layte was part of two national championship teams (1997, 1998) and two national runner-up finishes. In his four seasons as an assistant coach, Augsburg won four Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships, had 32 (out of a possible 40) MIAC individual titlists, 30 Division III All-Americas and six individual Division III national titlists. At Western New England College, where Layte wrestled from 1989-92, he was the 1991-92 New England Champion. Layte still holds the WNEC school records for most takedowns in a season (122), most career takedowns (189), and most takedowns in one match (15).

In 1995, Layte completed one of the most incredible seasons in Augsburg history, after transferring from WNEC. The Portland, Maine, native finished 44-4 in his lone season at Augsburg, winning the national championship at 150 pounds, while helping Augsburg win their 3rd NCAA national title and earning Outstanding Wrestler honors at the NCAA meet.
