NCWA Men’s Rankings — 11.23.18

Now that our wrestlers have gotten the chance to go home and stuff their faces, we can all sit back and enjoy the new rankings! Time to get off the couch and work your way on up or fend off those coming for the #1 spot!

The NCWA-D1 team rankings held close to the Preseason rankings with the gap between #1 Apprentice and #2 Liberty shrinking slightly. There is a new #3 with Grand Valley moving up. Springfield Tech jumped from #10 to #4 with strong showings in the Northeast from several newcomers. Toledo and UMBC held onto the #5 and #6 rankings, respectively. UCF saw the largest drop from previous #3 to #7. The gap between #3 and #7 in the current rankings, however, is 10 points. Grays Harbor, Mott CC, and North Texas round off the top-10 in Division 1.

NCWA-D2 is again led by #1 East Carolina (18 pts), followed by #2 West Chester (15), #4 Texas A&M (13), and #4t Penn State WC and Western Washington (12).

There are three new #1s individually. Brendan Hazelton (Grand Valley State - 133) takes over the #1 spot from De'Ante Evans (Toledo) after a contentious 8-5 win over the latter in the GLC Duals; Austin Amos (Liberty - 197) takes over the #1 spot over yet-to-wrestle Ross Graham (Apprentice) after an impressive 13-2 start in NCAA tournaments including a 1st place finish at Messiah, and two 3rd place finishes at Ursinus Fall Brawl and the Joe Parisi Open. The interesting thing about 197-lbs this year is that the top-3 guys are either returning National Champions or Finalist as Kyler Slade (2nd-197, Ohio State WC) is back this season from injury. The last new #1 is at 235-lbs where Jeffrey Allen (Liberty), a Virginia Tech transfer, takes over the spot from Harun Bogdanic (Grand Valley) who has yet to wear the Laker singlet this season. Allen is currently 11-4 with a 1st-place finish at Messiah and runner-up finish at Ursinus, both at 285-lbs.

The remaining #1 wrestlers in the Men's Division are as follows: 125 - Colton Messick (Apprentice, 10-3), 141 - Tyler Sage (Florida, 1-2), 149 - Zach Blevins (Toledo, 11-0), 157 - Dan Ritz (Penn State WC, 3-0), 165 - Chad Simmons (Apprentice, 12-1), 174 - Jacob Berry (Springfield Tech, 6-1), 184 - Vincent Levin (Florida Gulf Coast, 6-1), and 285 - Dominick Johnson (Liberty, 11-5).

The next rankings are scheduled to come out in late December.
