BYU Beats ColĀorado State for First Regional Duals Title

LAS VEGAS - BYU won the first two bouts to gain an 11-0 lead, and then clinched the NCWA Regional Duals by sweeping the last four matches from Colorado State in a 39-10 win. The win is the Cougars' first NCWA title of any kind, and earns six team points that will carry forward into the start of the NCWA Championships next month.

Weston Larson opened the championship match with a first-period pin, and Jansen Engelbrect followed with a 15-0 tech fall at 133 pounds. Louie Romero of Colorado State won a wild major decision, 28-14, at 141, but BYU's Tyler Weiss countered with a 10-2 major decison at 149.

BYU took a 20-7 lead after the first six matches, then swept the heavier weights to seal the title, including a pin at 235 by Jacob Childs and a forfeit at heavyweight. BYU is the favorite to win the NCWA's Great Plains Conference.

In the third-place match, Wayne State College pinned its way to a 42-19 win over Dixie State. Seven Wildcats wrestlers won by pin in the match. Wayne State senior captain Spencer Trout picked up four pins in his 4-0 tournament at 184 pounds. Two other WSC wrestlers posted 4-0 marks in the tournament - Gerald Kenkel (with three pins and a tech fall) at 174 pounds and Alejandro Martinez (two pins and a major decision) at 125. Wayne State will carry four points into the NCWA Championships, with Dixie State earning three.

Richland College (Texas) picked up fifth place and two national-tournament points from its 47-18 win over UNLV. North Texas, Arizona, Fresno State, USC and Cal State Northridge filled out the field of teams.
