Cougars Defeat Central Missouri 21 – 15
WARRENSBURG, Mo. - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville wrestling won five straight decisions at the middle weights, including two come-from-behind victories in the third period, to upend Central Missouri 21-15 Tuesday night.
SIUE Head Coach David Ray said the Cougars wrestled well against the Mules. SIUE improved its season record to 5-13.
After Paul Myers accepted a forfeit at 125 pounds, Central Missouri evened the match with a pair of wins. Cody Gillenwater defeated SIUE's John Petrov at 133 pounds 4-0. The same score gave UCM's Marcus Walker a win over Nick Capozzoli.
Derrick Pousson gave SIUE the lead for good with his 9-2 victory over Brandon Russow. Pousson and Russow were tied 2-2 after one period, but Pousson gained a reversal and a three-point near fall in the second period. Pousson scored the final seven points of the match.
"Derrick really set the tone," said Ray. "That set the tempo for the rest of the dual."
Kyle Lowman was victorious at 157 pounds with a third-period rally. He gained reversal and a near fall in the final seconds of the match to edge Russell Naylor 8-7.
Isaac Ervin and Steve Ross both won their matches to keep it rolling for the Cougars.
Deshoun White would make it five straight wins with his victory. Despite no score in the first period of the 184-pound match with William Ressel, White recorded two takedowns and two near fall points in the third period to collect a 6-3 win.
SIUE would lose the final two matches. The Cougars forfeited at 197 pounds. David Devine dropped his match at heavyweight 4-1 to Brandon Hayes.
The Cougars now return home for two matches Saturday. SIUE wrestles Knox at noon and Northern Illinois at 3 p.m. The matches will take place at the SIUE Fitness Center.
