University of South Florida Team Press ReleasesSeason Kicks off for University of South Florida | 10/22/2012 - On Saturday, October 27th the University of South Florida men's team will host a quad meet with three other Florida College programs: Florida Gulf Coast University, Florida Institute of Technology, and another team to be determined very soon. The event will be conducted using a round robin format between all four teams with wrestling starting at 12:00 PM.
University of South Florida returns two NCWA Southeast Conference tournament placers and National Championship Qualifiers in sophomores Ryan Hall (who qualified in 2011 at 125 lbs and placed 8th at the 2012 SEC tournament at 133 lbs) and Zach Morales (2011 8th at 157 lbs, 2012 National Championships qualifier at 157 lbs); both are captains this year. Joining them are sophomores Alex Bentancor and Josh Jeffries, junior Erik Yo, senior Stephen Brookings, and local freshmen talent Elliott Morales and Tyler Reed. The team is headed by Coach Matt Dunton, who wrestled for USF from 2008-2012, a National Championships Qualifier himself in 2011.
Florida Gulf Coast is headed by Coach Pat Milkovich, the winner of the 2012 NCWA Southeast Conference Coach of the Year award as voted on by SEC coaches. FGCU placed 9th in the 2012 NCWA Division II National Championships, finishing as the 2nd-best Division 2 team in the SEC and the 5th-best SEC team overall. The team is looking to return for more this season.
Florida Institute of Technology re-started its program last year after not having one since 2009. Coach Pat Field returns last year's athletes and introduces a few more for the 2012 season. They are sure to be in contention as well for the National Championships.
Wrestling will start at approximately 12 PM and is expected to be completed by 4 PM. Spectator cost is $10. The event will be located at the upper basketball gym of the University of South Florida's campus recreation center on the east side of campus.
