Lancers Kick Off 2009-2010 Season
The Longwood Lancer Wrestling Club travelled to Southern Virginia University in Buena Vista, Virginia to compete in the SVU Turkey Bowl on November 21, 2009. The Lancers competed against the Radford Wrestling Club, Virginia Military Institute, and Southern Virginia University. Several freshmen made their collegiate premieres, and four seasoned upper classman returned to the mat, giving a preview to the rest of the season.
Starting at the 133 weight class, Ricky Gambriel made an impressive freshman debut. Originally weighing in at 125 and wrestling up a weight class, Gambriel won both matches decisively and took home a prize bowl. At 141 Sean Ober, another freshman, came out strong and fought hard and went the distance in his first match . Ober shows lots of promise and is expected to contribute a lot to the Lancers over the next four years. Alex Vergara, a two time national qualifier at 133, returned to begin his 2009-10 campaign bumping up to 141, defeating VMI Division 1 wrestler, Tyler Davis. Brian Rich, 2x NCWA National qualifier at 149, wrestled up a weight class at 157 to gauge his performance at a higher weight class after reaching 185 during the off season as he focused on intensive strength training. Eddie Babineau, also at 157, went three hard rounds against Pete Rose, 2x National Champion, to begin the day. In his second match he sustained a season ending injury to his knee against Tyler Reedy, who went on to defeat Rose. Nathan Schwartz, another freshman, weighed in at 157 adding depth to the 157/165 weight class and is expected to fill out to the 164/175 weight classes by the end of the year. James Green, weighed in at 235, and is planning to continue to drop to the 185 weight class by the start of the spring 2010 semester. The difference in performance will be substantial as he looks to qualify for nationals in just his second season with the Lancers
