GVSU Claims Four Individual Titles at Fall Brawl
The GVSU Wrestling team opened their season by hosting the Fall Brawl with teams from Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan competing. Making their debut in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA), Ball State University traveled from Indiana to join the event. Longtime, NCWA Great Lakes Conference foes Bowling Green State University and the University of Toledo made the trek north from Ohio. Mott Community College (Flint) and the University of Michigan – Dearborn rounded out the GLC teams from Michigan. NJCAA power Muskegon Community College also entered several athletes to compete unattached.
The Lakers were led by individual championships in four weight-classes, each claiming their first collegiate championship. Joe Stolp (SO, Michigan Center) looked sharp in claiming the 125 pound championship by recording four wins on the day. Tyler Dempsey (FR, Delton Kellogg) won a deep 141 pound bracket with three tough wins in his GVSU debut.
GVSU dominated the 149 pound bracket, earning the top three spots – all by wrestlers making their first appearance for the Lakers. Two freshmen, Carter Augustyn (Calvin Christian) and Gabe Stepanovich (Forest Hills Northern) , reached the finals to face each other - choosing to share the championship for the event. In addition, Aaron Barker (SO, Sand Creek) battled back from a first round loss to claim third place honors, avenging the loss in his final bout.
The final champion for GVSU was Austin Geerlings (FR, East Kentwood). He defeated two different foes from Bowling Green in dominating fashion to win the 165 pound weight class.
Also placing for the Lakers were Torrell Maybon (FR, King College Prep (IL), 3rd at 157), Bruce Rau (FR, Saginaw Valley Lutheran, 2nd at 174), Shane Crawford (FR, Pinckney, 3rd at 174), Mark Crosetto (SO, Marian Catholic (IL), 3rd at 184, and Carl Worthy (SR, West Branch, 2nd at 235).
Claiming the other individual championships were Todd Melick (Mott, 133), Joe Roehl (Mott, 157), Zack Johnston (Muskegon–unattached, 174), Hassan Berry (UM-Dearborn, 184), Dominic Fimbianti (Ball State, 197), Colin Warner (Ball State, 235), and Shawn Chamberlain (Muskegon-unattached, 285).
The GVSU Wrestling Club will return to action next Saturday, November 3 at the Eastern Michigan Open.
