UGA Wins Dr. Avery Harvill Dual Tournament

11/30/2006 -
Dr. Avery Harvill Dual Tournament hosted by the University of Georgia

On Saturday, November18th the University of Georgia won its inaugural event.

The tournament was held in honor Dr. Avery Harvill, who started the NCAA wrestling program at UGA and coached from 1960 until 1966. Dr. Harvill and his wife were on hand for the event and took part in a ceremony to honor his achievements and dedication to the sport of wrestling and the University of Georgia.

Taking part were East Georgia College, Georgia Tech, Gordon College, Kennesaw State University, Maryville College, Mercer University and two squads from Darton College. The nine teams that attended the event were split into three pools of three teams in the preliminary round, with the winners from each pool facing off against one another in the championship round. Kennesaw State University, Darton College and the University of Georgia jumped out to an early lead against their competition, and each won their respective pool. Kennesaw State was an impressive first year program led by former University of Georgia National Champion and Most Outstanding Wrestler at Nationals Alex Tucker, but they were beaten by Darton College and the University of Georgia in succession.

The final duel was an exciting end to the event. Darton College jumped out to an early 18-0 lead with a forced forfeit in the 125 lb weight class and pins in the 133 and 141 weight classes. UGA gained some ground with a pin by 149 lb Alan Taylor and a 6-4 decision for 157 lb Mark Feeley, putting the score at 18-9 in favor of Darton College. The University of Georgia suffered a minor setback with a pin in the 165 lb weight class, moving the score to 24-9. UGA’s 174 lb wrestler Clint Casteel started a rally for the Bulldogs, pinning his opponent in 3:47 setting the score at 24-15; each match thereafter would result in a pin for the UGA wrestlers, all less than 2 minutes in length. UGA’s 184 lb Christian Hyatt, 197 lb Craig Taylor, 235 lb Ari Levine and 285 lb Shane Anderson continued the rally for the Bulldogs to finish out the tournament. Levine and Anderson bumped up a weight class from their normal 197 and 235 lb respective weight classes in order to avoid a forfeit at the 285 lb weight class, which worked out well for UGA. The final score: 39-24, the winner of the 1st Dr. Avery Harvill Dual Tournament is the University of Georgia!

The most outstanding wrestler of the tournament as voted on by the coaches present was 165 lb Donnie Floyd of Maryville College. Another wrestler of note was Kennesaw State University’s Johnnatha Queiroz, a 133 lb wrestler who went 4-0 in the 157 lb weight class.
