JMU Dukes Go 2-0 at Home Opener
The James Madison Dukes came out strong for their first home match since the Division 1 program was cut in 2007. In the first match of the day, JMU defeated the Longwood University Lancers by a score of 57 to 3. While Longwood's full lineup was unable to attend the match, the Dukes looked impressive against the Lancer's with pins from 165 junior Steve Hennigan, 133 sophomore Dan Ferrante, and 149 sophomore Wyatt Floyd. Senior Stephen Gunther squeaked out a 10-9 decision against Longwood's Alex Vergara at 141. JMU dropped their only loss at 125 as Longwood's Ricky Gambriel defeated JMU freshman Charlie Flynn by a decision of 8-2.
The Dukes looked equally impressive in their second match of the day, defeating the Virginia Military Institute 38-12. Jordan Peck started things off for the the VMI Keydets at 174 with an 8-3 decision over Preston Harrington. But the Dukes answered back with a 0:45 pin fall by Ivan Lagares at 184. After VMI's Eric Russo pinned James Gundlach, the Dukes won three straight with a 18-9 major by Alex Soltis at 235, a pin from 133 Dan Ferrante, and a 13-1 major by Stephen Gunther at 141. VMI achieved its third victory against the Dukes as Tyler Hutchens defeated Wyatt Floyd at 149 by a decision of 7-2. Sean Collins from JMU won a hard fought match at 157 by a score of 9-6, followed by an exciting finish to the day as JMU's Steve Hennigan took down Joel Hutchens to his back with only seconds left to come from behind and win 6-3. JMU looks to keep their streak alive as they compete against Virginia Tech University and Radford University at home on January 30th.
