HAMPTON, Va. - David Devine walked off the mat a national champion Saturday as the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville heavyweight helped the SIUE wrestling team to a third-place team finish at the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) National Championships.

The Cougars finished a solid third with 107.5 points and finished with six All-Americans. Central Florida won the tournament with 128.5 points followed by The Apprentice School with 111.5 points. There were 79 teams competing in the three-day tournament with 69 teams scoring at the event.

Devine, an SIUE freshman, won five matches in the tournament, culminating with a 7-5 victory over Hudson's Ed Backus.

Brendan Murphy, the other SIUE wrestler to advance to the semifinals, finished in third place. He defeated Central Florida's Steve DeAugustino in the third-place match 6-4.

Dillon Pousson placed fifth at 141 pounds. He pinned Raj Rai, of Douglas College, in the fifth-place match in 6:05. Steve Ross took fifth at 157 pounds with an 8-0 decision over Eric Powell, of Williamson Trade. A.J. Smith routed Stuart Roes, of The Apprentice School 17-4 for fifth-place at 197 pounds.

Eric Pretto worked his way through the 165-pound wrestlebacks and finished eighth. He was pinned in the final match by The Apprentice School's Will Harcum.
