|Achievements:|| In 2008, the sport of wrestling returned to the University of Connecticut and Ulrich "Rick" Bartel became head coach of this revived program. After 31 successful seasons as coach at the high school and college level in Rhode Island, the UConn team set its sights on competing at a high level in the NCWA and has enjoyed much success since. |
A graduate of Rhode Island College in Providence, Rick wrestled in the 177 lb. weight class for the undefeated "Anchormen" team of 1974-75. He also for several area semi-pro teams of the Eastern Football League as a linebacker, def. end and special teams player until injuries made it impossible to play any longer.
He has coached 7 NCWA All-American wrestlers and is Rhode Islands only high school All-American Coach. Coach Bartel is particularly proud of having coached 11 Academic All-Americans as his teams have been known to produce graduates of the highest quality.
|Coaching Experience:|| As an award winning teacher with the Providence (RI) School System for more than 29 years, Rick has coached successful high school teams at Providences Hope and Central HS, Our Lady of Providence Seminary and Ponaganset HS (North Scituate, RI) where his Erik was a member of his team. In 1999, he became the first wrestling coach at Bryant College (now Bryant University) and is the founder of the popular Groundhog Day Tournament and the Connecticut Classic of the Northeast Conference. Rick also Coached Football at Providences Hope HS for many years.|
Rick also serves as a referee of youth, Middle School, High School and Prep School wrestling in Connecticut and Rhode Island for many years as well as with the NCWA. During the summer, he is on the staff of the Competitive Edge Wrestling Camp (CT) and the Brown University Wrestling School (RI). He also is a baseball umpire at various levels.
Rick lives at the Snortn Buck Farm in Foster, RI with his wife Diane where they raise champion quarter horses, appaloosas, llamas, pigs and chickens. Rick is presently on the faculty of the Ocean Tides School in RI.
