GSU Performs Well in Early Season Tournaments

11/26/2011 -
Georgia Southern wrestlers shined in three season opening tournaments. The Eagles were in fine fashion at the Bear Open in Macon, GA where 5 wrestlers in 5 different weight classes made it to the finals with Lorenzo Gonzalez winning the 149 pound weight class and being named MOW for the tournament.

At the Citadel the following week, 7 different wrestlers walked away with at least one win in a field of over 300 wrestlers from mainly D-I schools including the Citadel, App State, UNCP, Newberry, Duke, Shorter, and Limestone. 141 Brian McAraw came a round away from placing in a tightly heated bout but went 4-2 on the weekend and Kevin Brou went 3-2 and a round away from placing with both losses coming from the same heavyweight wrestler from UNCP who took 3rd.

At UCF, the team lost its dual to UCF and Truett Mcconnell whom they had defeated earlier in the season but won against Florida Gulf Coast. In the traditional, several wrestlers again performed well with Sam Murphy at 184 and Kevin Brou at 235 getting to the Finals. Kevin Brou defeated former All-American Will Crawford from the Apprentice school before dropping a close match with former National Champion Josh Woods of UCF. Kevin Brou is currently ranked 10th in the country by points standings and GSU's top scorer as a Freshman. Of GSU's wrestlers fifteen of the twenty-one registered are Freshmen. A very young and promising team that is growing well together.
