BUENA VISTA, Va. - The 2009-10 Gallaudet University wrestling club season came to a close on Saturday in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) Mid-Atlantic Conference championships held at Southern Virginia University. The Bison (five points) finished 18th overall out of 20 teams as the Apprentice School won with 184 points.

Sophomore Chris Cassel (St. Augustine, Fla.) did the best for the Buff and Blue as he finished sixth overall in the 157-pound class with a 2-3 record. He received a first round bye and then lost 11-1 to Patrick McIntosh from Apprentice. Cassel then beat Luke Stefanacci, 5-0, and beat Joey Haleron, 11-10, before he lost to James Madison's Sean Collins, 6-4. In the fifth-place bout, he was pinned by VMI's Joel Hutchens in 2:59. For the year, Cassel finished above .500 with an individual record of 11-10.

GU had three other wrestlers compete at the Mid-Atlantic Conference championships but all lost two matches and were eliminated at their respective weight class.

Sophomore Richard Dahan (Potomac, Md.) received a bye to begin his quest for the 165-pound title but Will Harcum, the top-seed from Apprentice, quickly squashed that as he won by fall in 58 seconds. In the consolation round, Dahan lasted longer but was eventually pinned by Middle Tennessee State University's Nick Appleby in 5:54. Dahan finished with a 3-2 individual record for the season.

Junior Shannon Callahan (Shady Grove, Md.) got pinned in his two matches at the 174-pound level. In his first bout, he lost to Anthony Damico from Apprentice in 1:30. In the consolation round, he was pinned by Virginia Tech's Joseph Miller in 50 seconds. Callahan posted a 6-11 individual record this season.

Don Clupper had a tough match against top-seed Stuart Roes from Apprentice at the 197-pound class. Roes pinned Clupper in 46 seconds. Roes eventually won the 197-pound class title. Clupper, 38, was then pinned in 33 seconds against UMBC's Steve Neshawat in the consolation bracket. Clupper, a late addition to the team this season, finished 4-4.

Heavyweight senior Benjamin Bottoms (Chesterfield, Va.) did not compete as he wrapped up the year with a 6-7 individual record.
