GSU take 6th at Southeastern Conference Championships, qualify 6 for Nationals
Georgia Southern University qualified 6 of its wrestlers for the NCWA National Championships at the SEC Championships Saturday and placed 6th in the field of all teams from the states of Georgia, Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi.
Chris Stewart at 141 and Darren Sexton at 235 took 7th, Brooks Pendleton also at 235 took 6th. Shaun Scruggs at 197, Kamaal Barron at 184, and Caleb Mock at 285 each placed the higthest for their team taking 5th
The entire GSU team had to overcome a week of injury, setbacks, and misfortune with nearly all its wrestlers and was expected to place better at certain areas but fought back in the tournament to at least place its wrestlers and also qualify others who wrestled better than expected to cause some upsets and qualify for the big tournament. Coach Hurst told us that "Lots of kids had grow up moments this weekend, I was proud of my whole team with what they accomplished up to this point."
The GSU wrestlers will travel to Hampton, Virginia in 2 weeks for the National Tournament. The team expects to be healthy at that time and surpass even more expectations.
