MIT edges varsity programs for Groundhog Invitational team title.

Amherst, MA. – Amherst College played host to this year’s long-running Groundhog Invitational. This year’s tournament attracted some of the top teams in the Northeast including varsity programs Springfield Technical Community College and Western New England College. The 17 team field produced many exciting match-ups throughout the day and watched new NCWA member MIT come out on top by one point in the overall team standings. With six finalists, the Engineers came away with three champions edging out both varsity programs STCC and WNEC for the team title. Rounding out the top five were UMass Amherst and RPI, respectively.
Host Amherst College placed eighth out of the 17 team field and continued its dominance in the 235 pound weight class when Freshman Travis Dickenson of St. John's, MI took out the top 2 seeds for the individual title. Amherst College also received two 4th place finishes from Sophomore Gordy Lockbaum of Worcester, MA. and Freshman Stefan Breitling of Ames, IA at 165lb and 197lb respectively.
133lb. champion Bee Vang of MIT won the Charles “Chucky” Willis Award for the most outstanding lightweight wrestler and 197lb. champion Max Huntley of Blair Academy won the Ted Labossiere III award for the most outstanding heavyweight wrestler.
