Flames battle tough at Mercer Duals
MACON, GA – The Lee Flames (Tenn.) and head coach Joe Jellison proved once again to be tough competition at the Mercer Duals over the weekend, grappling to a 6-6 draw with Gordon College (Ga.). The short-handed Flames opened their second half of the season against host Mercer, Georgia Southern University, and Gordon with first-rate performances from both of their wrestlers that were on display Saturday.
Senior Casey Grisham put a blank on his competition, going 3-0 in the 157 lb class and staying undefeated on the season. Grisham haunted opponents all day with great size and speed, pinning two of his victories and winning the third 6-0.
Sophomore Stephen Ward continued his journey in becoming one of Jellison’s top posing threats on the team. Although Ward went winless in the 174 lb. class on the day (0-3) he showed tremendous heart and potential, even forcing his coach to do a double take after a phenomenal slam of his opponent.
“It was the best take down I have seen from him all year,” said Jellison.
Competition only gets stronger and more competitive as the men hit the heart of their schedule and head to Athens, Ga for the 5th annual Classic City Championship hosted by the University of Georgia on Saturday, Feb. 6. at the Ramsey Center.
