East Georga College's First SEC Champion
East Georgia College wrestler, Steven Strickland, became EGC’s first Southeastern Conference champion on Saturday, February 28, by defeating Marion Military Institute's Dominic DeMarco 9-4 in the 197-pound weight class. Strickland used three takedowns and aggressive riding to dominate the match and seal the victory. Earlier in the day, he had pinned two of his other opponents to advance to the finals. By his victory, Strickland advances to the National Collegiate Wrestling Association’s national tournament to be held in Hampton, Virginia, on March 12-14. He boasts of a 22-4 season record, which includes six pins.
Strickland is one of three EGC wrestlers to qualify for the NCWA national tournament. One-hundred-thirty-three-pounder, Tyson Gilland, captured third place at the conference championship with two falls and a 3-1 record on the day. He secured his third-place finish with a convincing 12-2 superior decision over Harrison Billig of the University of Central Florida. He is 15-6 on the year with 11 pins. Kyle Tau, wrestling at 184 pounds, took fifth place and qualified for nationals with an 8-5 decision and a forfeit. His season record is 13-13 against some of the toughest competition in the NCWA’s SEC conference. The EGC wrestlers will leave for the national tournament on Wednesday, March 11.
