Builders Finish Second In Home Invitational
NEWPORT NEWS, VA. - The Apprentice School wrestling team competed on the home mats for the first time this season and took second place out of 14 teams in the 29th annual Apprentice School Invitational on Saturday.
The Builders had a pair of champions in junior Matt Perry (Chesapeake, Va./Oscar Smith) who won a pair of matches at 149 pounds. He pinned Ahmed Dorghoud of Southern Virginia in 6:54 for his first win and defeated TJ Gillin of the University of Central Florida 8-5 in the championship match.
Senior Cecil Lee (Portsmouth, Va./Churchland) scored three victories on Saturday to win the heavyweight division. In his opener he pinned Kenneth Wade of Kennesaw State University in 54 seconds. That victory enabled Lee to break the school's all-time career victories mark as he now stands with 103 wins. He shared the mark with former heavyweight Darrick Walker (1996-2000) with 100. Following that match he was presented an award honoring his record from Apprentice School Athletic Director Keisha Pexton and Head Coach Bruce Shumaker.
Lee followed that win by pinning Karim Mansour of University of Maryland Baltimore County in 3:24 before scoring a 14-5 major decision over Lucas Borneman of Middle Tennessee State University in the finals.
Two Builders took seconds on the day with junior Ty Holley (Erwin, NC/Triton) took second place at 141 pounds. He won his first match by fall over Will Rothenberg of University of Central Florida in 1:24, before losing to Justin Bowser of UMBC in the finals.
Sophomore Daniel Hare (Smithfield, Va./Smithfield) took second at 184 pounds opening up with a win by fall in 3:42 over Garrett Guy of Kennesaw State and a fall in 6:51 over Joe Eassa of UMBC in the semifinals. He lost to Richard Rippy of UCF in the finals.
Two Builders took third place as freshman Ricky Anderson (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) won his third-place match by tech fall 18-2 over Brian Rich of Longwood University. Fellow freshman Charles Mills (Republic, Wash./Republic) took third at 174 winning his third-place match by fall in 3:29 over Joe Miller of Virginia Tech to go 3-1 on the day.
University of Central Florida won the team title for the second year in a row scoring 108 points, with three champions and three second-place finishes. The Builders were second with 89.5 points, followed by UMBC with 35 and Southern Virginia University with 34.5.
Next up for the Builders will be the first National Collegiate Wrestling Association National Duals as they will travel to Murfreesboro, Tennessee on January 31.
