On Thanksgiving weekend, the East Georgia College Bobcat wrestling team more than met its match. On Saturday, November 29, the Bobcats traveled to Albany, Georgia, to wrestle against perennial National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) Southeastern Conference powerhouse, University of Central Florida, and Darton College, new to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
While the Bobcats wrestled hard, forfeiting four weight classes proved to be too much for them. In the first dual meet of the triad, the EGC grapplers fell to the Knights of UCF by a score of 45-5. One hundred and twenty five pounder Tony Pullen wrestled first and proved to be the only victorious Bobcat as he won a technical decision (a win by greater than fourteen points) over UCF’s Daniel Desenberg. Tough wrestling characterized the meet, however, as Tyson Gilland (133), Steven Strickland (197), and Chris Wickstrom (235) dropped their matches to ranked opponents by a combined seven points.
In the second dual against Darton, four forfeits hurt the Bobcats, but Jeremy Moats (157) picked up an 11-6 decision against Darton’s Davarius Thomas and Steven Strickland and Chris Wickstrom (235) garnered forfeits. The final score was Darton 42, EGC 15.
The Bobcats will start the new year with a quadrangular meet (four teams) on Saturday, January 10, 2009, in the EGC gym when the Darton Cavaliers, the Mercer Bears, and the Georgia Southern Eagles face off against one another and EGC. Wrestling begins at 1 p.m. with additional matches at 2 and 3 p.m.
