UMBC crowns two champs at Apprentice
With two individual champions, and one runner up, The University of Maryland, Baltimore County wrestling team placed fifth this weekend at The Apprentice School Invitational.
Three of the middleweight finals were a battle between perennial NCWA powerhouse University of Central Florida and UMBC.
In the finals at 149, Alex Broadwater (Catonsville High School) defeated Central Florida's Rob McCarty, an NCWA National Finalist, by a score of 7 – 4. For his efforts, the other tournament champions voted to award Broadwater the Champion of Champions trophy.
At 174, Will Maegerle (Rising Sun) pinned Central Florida's top seeded Chris Hauser in 1:39. This, coupled with a first period pin in the quarterfinal bout, tied Maegerle for the most falls in the least amount of time.
At 184, Gwo Shih (Northwestern) majored his way into the finals, but fell short of a title with a loss to Central Florida's Zachary Sanford, an NCWA National Finalist.
The individual titles by Broadwater and Maegerle were the first for UMBC at the event since the team began attending in 2005. With six finalists and three eventual champions, Central Florida won the team title.
