BGSU Wrestling News Vol. 2
BGSU WRESTLING NEWS
Bowling Green, Ohio
Following our initial Newsletter which provided an overview of the NCWA and the BGSU Wrestling Club, the purpose of this, our second Newsletter, is to bring you up to date on this season
BGSU started off with the Muskegon Open which featured not only NCWA wrestlers, but also wrestlers from NCAA Division I, II and III programs. Wrestling is always tough at this tournament, and for many of the BG wrestlers, this was their first collegiate wrestling experience. Overall, the team wrestled very competitively, but none of our wrestlers placed.
Next, we traveled to Mott Community College to compete in the Mott “Wrestling Bears” Open. Again, we faced Division I, II and III opponents. BG wrestled very competitively overall, and placed two wrestlers, Rudy Corpus (125) and Mike Robles (235) at 4th and 3rd, respectively.
In early December, the Falcons faced local rival, The University of Toledo, on their home mat losing a very tight dual match 27 to 21.
Just before winter break, BG traveled to Indiana Wesleyan University for a five team dual competition. BG suffered a disappointing first round loss to Indiana Wesleyan, but came back to win the next three dual matches over Rio Grande, The University of Cincinnati and The University of Southern Indiana.
Returning from winter break, BG competed in the University of Cincinnati Duals. The Falcons took second, losing to Ohio State in the championship match, while registering victories over Wright State, The University of Dayton and Indiana Wesleyan University, settling the score from the loss to IWU a month earlier.
The Ohio Duals at Miami University were next, where the Falcons took fifth after losing to Ohio University in a very close match. BG did register wins at the Ohio Duals against the University of Cincinnati, Wright State and The University of Dayton by an average of over 50 points per dual match.
On February 3rd, BG hosted the BGSU Duals bringing in Grand Valley State University, last year’s NCWA National Champion, Miami University, winner of the Ohio Duals, Notre Dame University (Cleveland), ranked in the top dozen or so teams nationally in the NAIA and The University of Toledo. To say that the competition was intense among these five teams would perhaps be an understatement. BG wrestled extremely hard, but eventually fell to Grand Valley, Miami and Notre Dame. In the final match of the Duals, however, with both teams plagued by openings in their line ups due to injuries sustained earlier in the day, BG avenged their loss earlier in the season to UT by a score of 49 to 12 over the Rockets.
Attached is the current BGSU roster listing the individual Falcon wrestlers, their records and NCWA points to date.
Our next and final Newsletter this season will be published after the North Central Conference Championships hosted by Grand Valley State University on February 24, 2007 and the NCWA National Championships to be held in Dallas, Texas on March 8, 9 and 10, 2007.
