The quarterfinals begin at noon Saturday at the Northwest Georgia Trade and Convention Center, with the semifinals scheduled for 4 p.m. and the finals at 6 p.m.
Liberty strolled through its opening matches against Southern Virginia (49-6) and South Florida (45-9), then got past Florida Gulf Coast 43-15 in the round of 16 despite upset losses against two of its ranked wrestlers. In the 174-lb. bout, FGCU’s Giovanni Jiovenetta converted a second-period reversal into a pin over Liberty’s Keyshawn Ward, the NCWA’s top-ranked wrestler at 174. Two weights later, Jiovenetta’s brother Vincent scored an escape in overtime to edge Liberty’s Aaron Thompson, the top-ranked wrestler at 197.
The day’s other upset came from No. 10-seed Grand Valley State, which scored four pins and gave up forfeits in the final three weights in breezing past No. 7-seed Mercer, 35-22, in the third round. GVSU then topped Marion Military Institute, 42-15, in the round of 16.
